The Renal program at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital is proud to have been named a 5 Diamond Facility by the Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition for its dedication to patient safety and awareness of renal disease.
Your kidneys are vital organs because they perform many functions on a daily basis that keep you healthy and your body working the way it should. When your kidneys lose their ability, renal dialysis treatment can become a life-saving option. Dialysis takes over kidney function by eliminating waste materials in the blood and maintaining a proper chemical balance.
The not-for-profit Renal Dialysis program at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital is not only the second oldest program in Maryland, it’s also the largest single location dialysis facility in the state as well. We also provide dialysis services to four area nursing homes. This long history of patient care combined with the experience of treating many patients is why we’re the center-of-choice for dialysis patients throughout the region. Our center provides dialysis treatment to over 46,000 patients annually and is honored to have been designated a 5 Diamond Facility by the Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition. We are also proud of Bernard Jaar, MD, nephrologist at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, who serves as a medical advisor on the board of the National Kidney Foundation and has received their America's President's Award for his efforts with chronic kidney disease.
Expert Care with Comfort in Mind The care you receive goes beyond just setting up and managing your dialysis treatment. Our staff goes out of their way to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Our dialysis center offers:
Open throughout the year (as a hospital dialysis center, we do not close due to inclement weather)
Your treatment plan is carried out by a kidney care team comprised of expert physicians, nurses, technicians, dietitians and social workers that have decades of combined experience in treating kidney failure. They are also dedicated to addressing other illnesses closely associated with kidney disease including diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Your dialysis treatment is customized to your specific needs and circumstances. A number of treatment options are available, so that your dialysis can be as a comfortable and convenient experience:
Outpatient renal dialysis services: include two outpatient dialysis units: 24 stations in the main hospital building, and 30 stations in the East Building on the hospital campus. Both units focus on the needs of their patients. Necessary supplies are close by, each station allows for patient privacy, and personal televisions are placed beside every chair. Our units have been designed to create a quiet, relaxing atmosphere.
Inpatient renal dialysis services: unit includes eight beds. Patients recover from their illnesses while maintaining their routine dialysis schedules. The staff on our inpatient unit are experts at giving dialysis care and at addressing and caring for other illnesses and diseases.
Peritoneal dialysis:is available 24 hours a day, and our peritoneal dialysis staff can help whenever needed. Dialysis at home is easy and offers many advantages, such as increased flexibility with schedules and a less restricted diet.
As a hospital-based dialysis unit, we offer you the convenience and peace of mind of having an emergency room in close proximity.
Choosing the Best Options for Your Care Understanding what options are available for treatment and the value that each provides to you is an important part of your long-term health and wellness. That’s why we created a special Kidney Options class, so that you understand all of your treatment options and what's best for you:
Kidney Options Class: This session is designed for those who have kidney disease, but are not yet receiving dialysis treatment. Kidney Options is a chance for patients, as well as families and caregivers, to meet with a nurse, social worker and dietitian to discuss treatment options and get answers to the questions that are most important to you. Sessions are held the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. You may register online or call 443-444-4100.
