Pain Relief

In the field of pain medicine, the focus is not only on diagnosing what causes pain generators to occur in patients, but also to find the proper treatment to help heal the source of pain.

What is Pain?

Most forms of pain can be divided into two categories: acute and chronic. Acute pain is temporary. Examples include burns, cuts, and fractures. Chronic pain ranges from mild to severe and can last weeks, months, years, and even a lifetime. Examples include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Pain is Subjective

What one person feels is excruciating, another may find only moderate or even mild.

The more accurately you can describe your pain, the better your physician can determine its cause and how to treat it. Aside from indicating where you feel pain and when it started, answers to the following can help your physician better understand your pain:

  • How would you describe the pain: dull, sharp, aching, throbbing, shooting or burning?
  • From mild to the worst pain of your life, how intense is your pain?
  • How does the pain affect your sleep, daily activities and mood?
  • What specific movements/activities make your pain worse?
  • How do you ease your pain

Watch Dr. Tiffany Williams, pain management specialist at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, talk about the options patients have for managing their pain.
