Independent Living

Independent living with support services is one of the fastest growing residential choices for seniors in this country. People are drawn to this option because it offers a homelike atmosphere, freedom and privacy — along with the security of a supportive community.

This type of residence provides an alternative for relatively independent older adults who want a helping hand with everyday activities, like cooking and housekeeping, as well as a social setting with activities and friends to share meals.

Companionship, opportunities to socialize and recreational activities are important parts of what independent living offers. Such a network of support can help reduce loneliness and feelings of depression. In fact, research shows that this type of social contact can actually help people not only feel better, but also function better and longer.

One study notes that older adults who live in such senior communities report better emotional health than people of the same age living in other types of housing.

Residents of assisted living and independent living communities with support services enjoy the benefits of meals in a common dining room, house cleaning, transportation to stores or the doctor and laundry service.

People can get help, if needed, with daily living activities like dressing, bathing and taking medicines. The appeal to residents is that they may retain control over how much and what kind of assistance they get. Plus they have the security of knowing help is available whenever they need it, 24 hours a day.

Different assisted/independent living facilities offer various amenities. Popular options include recreation and exercise rooms, outdoor gardens, libraries and beauty salons. Also popular are activities such as:

  • Dancing
  • Gardening
  • Live music
  • Theater performances
  • Organized outings of various types.

Many assisted and independent living communities allow and even encourage residents to keep pets.

Most of these communities also provide exercise and health promotion programs — including our Vintage healthy aging membership program — that can help people maintain or improve their strength and stamina. This is key to the philosophy of senior living: helping residents stay independent as they age.
