Gender Knee Implants Designed for Women

Many of MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital’s orthopedic surgeons use a knee replacement whose shape is modified to better fit female bones. “The gender knee is a modification of a conventional knee replacement that was designed to better fit female bones,” according to Darioush Nasseri, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. “This will allow us to offer women an implant that may better fit their bones.”

Studies have shown that the shape of women’s knees differs from men’s. And it’s not just a size difference. Although traditional replacement knees are available in different sizes, the gender knee reproduces the unique female shape.

The new replacement allows for more natural movement, has a thinner profile and has a contoured shape to accommodate the anatomical difference in men’s and women’s knees.

While Dr. Nasseri agrees that the gender knee may fit women better than conventional implants, he adds, “As always, we will carefully assess the knee to determine the implant that best suits each patient, regardless of his or her gender.”
