Choosing a Primary Care Physician
At MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, we believe that very Good care begins with choosing a primary care physician (PCP) to act as a partner in your health care. We have many physicians who are accepting new patients, and are committed to providing you and your family with the best care. If you don't get sick very often, you may wonder why you need a regular doctor. It's important to establish a relationship with a primary care physician who helps you make medical decisions and oversees the care you may need from specialists. By seeing a doctor on a regular basis, you will have someone who knows your health care needs and can help you make important medical decisions should the need arise. Besides treating existing medical conditions, your doctor will be able to identify changes in your health that may need additional attention. MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital would like to be your partner in healthcare.
What does a PCP do?
Your doctor is your greatest asset to maintaining good health. Besides seeing you when you are sick, your doctor also will ask you to come in for wellness visits, and help you keep up with the screenings and tests you need, according to your age and health condition.
What happens if I need to see a specialist?
Your physician is familiar with your medical condition, so he will be able to recommend the best specialist for you, according to your individual needs. He will oversee your care, explain your options, and help you understand why you need a specialist.
What are some questions I should ask my doctor?
After you choose a physician, ask if he is board-certified. This means the doctor has had training after medical school and has passed an examine certifying him as a specialist in his field. Also, ask what insurance he accepts, who sees his patients when he is out of town, and how long it takes to get an appointment for a routine visit, as well as for urgently needed care. In addition, it's a good idea to choose a doctor who listens carefully to your concerns, explains things clearly and fully, shows respect for you and anticipates your health problems. The doctor also should allow you to ask questions, and provide answers that you can understand.
