Nursing

A Message from Shirley A. Roth, RN, Chief Nursing Officer

Trusted Nurses, Caring for Patients and Others, Advancing Practice

The MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Vision Statement is just that, a statement until we translate it into action. Translating our vision into actions results in the best possible patient and employee experience and requires constant vigilance. It also requires a collective focus that embraces both our culture of safety and pride in our profession. We are committed to achieve and continuously improve quality outcomes, service excellence and our professional nursing practice environment. Our success depends on a highly skilled, engaged and creative workforce whose combined talents eliminate barriers to health care delivery and advances to our practice.

We are strong supporters of the recommendations made by the Robert Wood Johnson report on the Future of Nursing and include many components as part of our annual strategic planning documents. We are actively providing opportunities for our staff to be both consumers of, and participants in, nursing research. Our first Nursing Residency Program is underway and is part of a MedStar Institutional Review Board approved research projects. We have well established programs to increase our current BSN rate of 51% to the expected 80% by 2020. We recognize the need and the opportunity to incorporate technology into everyday practice to achieve excellent outcomes.

“Nursing Excellence” is both a personal and professional commitment. It is a journey of lifelong learning. I am proud to be leading our pursuit of nursing excellence.

Sincerely,

Shirley A. Roth, RN
