Vertebroplasty Relieves Pain, Gets People Moving
Compression fractures once meant conservative treatment, narcotics, and a wait-and-see approach. Now there's vertebroplasty — and MedStar Good Samaritan is one of only five hospitals in the Baltimore area that features this procedure.
Using Fluoroscopic guidance, polymethylmethacrylate — the same cement used in hip replacements — is injected into the vertebral cavity. The cement is solid in 15 minutes. After two hours of rest and clearing of sedative effects, the patient may go home. The intense pain is usually gone in 24 to 48 hours.
