Baltimore—(June 17, 2014)—MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Harbor Hospitals have named their 2014 Nurse of the Year, honoring top nurses and recognizing the dedication, commitment and passion of the entire MedStar Health nursing team. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital will also honor the tradition of naming a Nurse of the Year in November.

It’s through the commitment of skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate nurses, who champion for patients during the most vulnerable moments of their lives, that nursing excellence rises to the top. MedStar Health recognizes the role nurses have in the patient experience and ensuring quality outcomes.
MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Harbor acknowledged their nurses during their annual Nurses Week celebrations in May. Nursing’s top honor was awarded to those who truly commit to redefining nursing practice. Congratulations to the 2014 Nurse of the Year recipients:
- Ashley Wells, RN, Charge Nurse, Surgical Unit, MedStar Franklin Square
With the respect and admiration of her team, Wells is referred to by her peers as a role model charge nurse and transformational leader. She uses a proactive approach to provide structure, balance and consistency within the unit. Wells encourages a culture of safety and is engaged in every aspect of quality on the unit and in the organization. Dedicated to improving outcomes and enhancing the patient experience, Wells seizes opportunities to improve her practice and approach, while also providing support and mentorship to both new and seasoned staff.
- Megan Van Hoy, RN, Charge Nurse, Orthopaedic Unit, MedStar Good Samaritan
Van Hoy exemplifies the definition of what a nurse should be, giving 100 percent to her patients and their families, as well as her peers, each and every day. She is described as a nurse who listens to patients’ concerns and responds efficiently and effectively. As a charge nurse, she makes sure that not only the needs of patients are met but she anticipates the needs of the family as well. Van Hoy embraces change and innovation and is not afraid to speak up and suggest ways to improve patient care.
- Amanda Rothenbecker, RN, Charge Nurse, Orthopaedic Unit, MedStar Harbor
Rothenbecker’s peers describe her as professional, respectful, inspirational; her patients describe her as dedicated, compassionate, timely. Though these words are used to describe most nurses, Rothenbecker sets herself apart by effortlessly living each of these traits day in and day out. As a charge nurse, she exhibits the qualities of a natural leader with a strong commitment to excellence. She provides calming guidance in difficult situations, encourages teamwork towards innovative solutions, and refocuses efforts to meet the needs of those around her. Through her work on the Clinical Advancement Council and continuing education, Rothenbecker is committed to professional development in order to advance her career to become a nurse practitioner.
