MedStar Health Physicians Named 2015 “Top Docs” by Baltimore Magazine

Top_Doc_News_ImageBaltimore(October 28, 2015)—MedStar Health is proud to announce that 92 of its Baltimore hospital physicians have been identified by Baltimore magazine’s much anticipated and highly coveted “Top Docs” 2015 list, now on stands.

Each year, Baltimore magazine publishes the annual list of "Baltimore’s Top Doctors". The physicians honored with this title are chosen by their peers who respond to survey questions asking what physician would you send your own family member to. Nearly 10,000 physicians in the region were surveyed for this year’s list, including an online poll of physicians to augment the mailed survey responses. Baltimore magazine then publishes the top physicians named in each of the specialties.

MedStar Sports Medicine Hosts Prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 2015 European Traveling Fellows

MedStar_Sports_Medicine_SquareBALTIMORE—(August 5, 2015)—MedStar Sports Medicine was selected as one of only six sites in the nation to host the prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 2015 European Traveling Fellows. As one of the premier sports medicine programs in the country, MedStar Sports Medicine’s participation in this international exchange program fostered collaboration among colleague’s worldwide, inspiring innovation and advancing the field of sports medicine.

MedStar Sports Medicine hosted the fellows from July 2-5 in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. During their visit, the fellows gained insight into the integrated sports medicine program of one of the nation’s largest health care systems. MedStar Sports Medicine brings together nearly 20 fellowship trained sports orthopaedic surgeons and a network of primary care sports medicine providers, certified athletics trainers, physical therapists, nutritionists, sports performance professionals, and sports-specific researchers under a single tent covering the Baltimore/Washington corridor.

The fellows, including João Espregueira–Mendes, MD, of Portugal, past president of the European Society of Knee Surgery; Sebastian Kopf, MD, of Germany; Nicolas Pujol, MD, of France; and Christiaan van Bergen, MD, of the Netherlands; met with clinical and research leaders, toured MedStar Sports Medicine’s facilities, and spent time observing clinics, surgical procedures, lectures and labs.

AOSSM’s traveling fellowship program is an annual scientific and cultural exchange among orthopaedic sports medicine physicians in North America and Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. The program is a unique opportunity for individuals to witness orthopaedic sports medicine techniques and surgeries from around the world. The program offers a rich experience with opportunities to:

  • Foster an exchange of scientific information, stimulate research and develop partnerships among physicians who practice sports medicine in North America, Europe, Latin America and Pacific Rim countries
  • Serve as a bridge that may be used to forge the future of sports medicine worldwide
  • Provide a stimulus for leadership by recognizing young physicians who have made a significant contribution to sports medicine
  • Participate in social and cultural activities with the local sports medicine community

MedStar Sports Medicine also hosted the AOSSM Latin American and Asian Traveling Fellows in 2012. This most recent visit makes MedStar Sports Medicine one of the few sports programs that have had the opportunity to work with all three traveling fellowships in the past five years.

MedStar Orthopaedics’ Darioush Nasseri, MD, Awarded Ellis Island Medal of Honor; Recognized as Pioneer in Field of Orthopaedics

Baltimore—(August 13, 2014)—Recognized as a pioneer in the field of orthopaedics, Darioush Nasseri, MD, MedStar Orthopaedics’ physician at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, has been awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO). Dr. Nasseri joins an elite group of medalists, including six United States Presidents, Nobel Prize winners, and leaders of industry, education, the arts, sports and government.

The award is presented annually to American citizens who have distinguished themselves within their own ethnic group while exemplifying freedom, liberty and compassion as part of their life’s work. Dr. Nasseri, a native of Iran, was recognized for his contribution to the field of orthopaedics, as a key developer of a technique for hip resurfacing with human osteochondral graft.

Published in the Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research in 1975, the technique, developed in Germany, replaced the traditional use of metal or plastic implants with viable human donor cartilage to resurface the hip joint. Dr. Nasseri was also involved in instrument design and participated in the first surgery to use the technique. He later traveled to the United States to demonstrate the technique at leading orthopaedics institutions across the country.

Today, Dr. Nasseri practices at MedStar Good Samaritan as a board-certified orthopaedic physician, fellowship-trained in joint replacement. With decades of experience, both in the United States and abroad, he has special interest in arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive hip and knee replacements, adult reconstructive and revision total joint surgery, as well as cartilage restoration techniques.

Dr. Nasseri received the Ellis Island Medals of Honor award at a ceremony held on Ellis Island. Recognized by both the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate, he and the other recipients, joined by all branches of the United States Armed Forces, were read into the Congressional Record.
