Since its inception in 1973, the auxiliary has contributed nearly $4.5 million to the hospital for the purchase of medical equipment and services related to patient care. Just as the hospital has grown over time, so, too, has the auxiliary, which now boasts nearly 250 members - up significantly from its original roster of 14 members.
Good deeds make for better care
The auxiliary's yearly contribution to the hospital now averages more than $260,000 - a huge increase over its first donation (in 1974) of $4,323. As a result of its annual fund-raising activities, which include all proceeds from the Gift Shop, an annual fashion show, Lights of Love campaign and a variety of sales and boutiques, the auxiliary has purchased a wide range of medical equipment for the hospital. In recent years, a nurse-patient call system, a graphite operating table, a nuclear medicine gamma camera and a urology cystoscopy suite have all been purchased with funds donated by the auxiliary. In November 2006, the auxiliary made a $1 million pledge to the Legacy Campaign, which raised $20 million for the hospital.
"Thanks to their hard work and dedication, this equipment has helped to save and improve the lives of countless patients," says Ann Hott, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital's manager of volunteer services.
Though Ann keeps track of all of the auxiliary's contributions to the hospital, she is the first to say that the auxiliary itself is "priceless."
The MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital Thrift Shop sells new and nearly new clothing and household items at extremely reasonable prices. All Thrift Shop proceeds are used to purchase medical and patient care equipment and services for the hospital.
